Environmental remediation and contamination cleanup for Metro Detroit buildings

When floodwater, a fire or a spill leaves contamination in a commercial building, RMO does the hands-on cleanup: containment, removal of affected materials and decontamination of the structure, within the plan set by your environmental consultant.

What environmental remediation means at RMO

Environmental remediation covers a wide range of work, so it's worth being clear about our part. RMO is a restoration contractor. We clean up contamination inside buildings after a loss: floodwater that carried fuel, oil or chemicals into a lower level, a heating oil or hydraulic fluid release inside a facility, residue from a fire involving stored chemicals, or silt and debris left by an overland flood. We contain it, remove what can't be cleaned, decontaminate what can and restore the building.

Environmental consultants do the testing, characterize the contamination and the waste, and write the work plan and clearance criteria. Our crews carry out that plan: containment and negative air, protective equipment, removal of affected drywall, insulation, flooring and contents, cleaning of structural surfaces, and packaging of waste for disposal as the consultant classifies it. Once the consultant clears the area, our rebuild team takes over.

Older buildings can add asbestos or lead paint to the job. If testing finds either material where we need to work, the abatement is done under containment by licensed abatement partners we've worked with for years, coordinated by RMO, before demolition and the rebuild continue. Spill reporting and agency contact stay with you and your consultant. Clear lines like these keep the project, and its paperwork, in order.

  • A restoration contractor's role

We do the physical cleanup in and around the building, while testing, waste classification and clearance stay with your consultant.

  • Containment first

Barriers, negative air and decontamination areas keep contamination from spreading to clean parts of the site.

What our environmental remediation work includes

  • Initial containment

Affected areas are isolated quickly to stop contamination spreading through foot traffic, airflow or water.

  • Work to your consultant's plan

Testing, waste classification and clearance criteria come from your environmental consultant, and our crews follow them.

  • Protective equipment and decontamination

Crews wear protective equipment suited to the contaminant and pass through a decontamination area when leaving the work zone.

  • Removal of affected materials

Contaminated drywall, insulation, flooring, ceiling tile and contents are removed and packaged.

  • Structural decontamination

Concrete, framing and hard surfaces are cleaned with methods suited to the contaminant.

  • Waste packaging

Waste is packaged and labeled to match the consultant's classification and transported for disposal accordingly.

  • Drying and rebuild

After clearance, the area is dried as needed and our team rebuilds what was removed.

A person answers 248-845-0000 at any hour and asks a few quick questions, so the right crew and equipment roll.

  2. On site in about 60 minutes

Across Metro Detroit, an IICRC-certified crew arrives, finds the source and makes the property safe.

  3. Mitigate and document

We stop the damage, extract and dry, and record photos and moisture readings your insurer can use.

  4. Restore and rebuild

Once everything is dry and clean, the same team handles the repairs, from drywall and flooring to finishes.

Why consultants and owners work with RMO

  • Clear division of roles

We carry out the cleanup and leave testing, classification and clearance to your consultant, so the findings stay independent.

  • Restoration after cleanup

Unlike a cleanup-only crew, we dry and rebuild the space once it is cleared, under the same project.

  • One record for every party

Daily logs, photos and waste records give your consultant, insurer and auditors a consistent account of the work.

Questions people ask us

Don’t see yours? A person answers 248-845-0000 around the clock.

Do you test for contamination?

No. Testing and waste classification are done by an independent environmental consultant, which keeps the results objective. If you don't have a consultant yet, we can explain what kind of firm to contact, and we carry out the cleanup within their plan.

Do you remove asbestos or lead paint?

Yes, as part of your job. If testing finds asbestos or lead paint where we need to work, the abatement is done by licensed abatement partners we've worked with for years, under containment and following Michigan's rules, before demolition and repairs continue. We coordinate it and plan it into the same schedule, so you don't have to find another company.

Can you respond to a spill after hours?

Yes. A person answers 248-845-0000 at any hour, and a crew can arrive in about 60 minutes to contain the area and limit spread. Any reporting the release requires stays with you and your consultant, and we can supply photos and notes to support it.

Does property insurance cover contamination cleanup?

Often only in part, if at all. Standard commercial property policies commonly limit or exclude pollution, and some businesses carry separate pollution coverage, so check with your carrier or broker early. We document the work in detail either way.
