Sensitive process equipment in a clean manufacturing room

Electronics restoration for Metro Detroit businesses after water, smoke or soot

Computers, servers, controls and office equipment exposed to water or smoke may be cleaned instead of replaced, if the work starts before corrosion sets in. RMO stabilizes, cleans and documents affected electronics and works with your IT team and service technicians on the next steps.

What happens to electronics after a fire or flood

Electronics fail after a loss in two ways. Water causes short circuits when power is applied and leaves minerals and contaminants on circuit boards. Smoke from burning plastics deposits residue containing chlorides, which turns corrosive with humidity and attacks connectors, contacts and solder joints. Both kinds of damage worsen with time, which is why the first days matter.

We start by stabilizing the environment: removing water, lowering humidity and filtering the air so corrosion slows. Equipment is inventoried, tagged and photographed. Items worth restoring are moved to a clean, controlled area, cleaned with methods suited to the device and dried. Servers, drives and storage arrays are set aside unpowered for your IT team or a data recovery specialist, because recovering data is specialist work outside our scope.

Whether a device is cleaned or replaced is a decision for you, your insurer and the people who service the equipment. We document each item's exposure, the work done and its condition, then hand it back to your technicians for testing and recommissioning. That record lets your adjuster weigh cleaning against replacement item by item.

  • Don't power it on

Wet or soot-covered electronics can short out when switched on. Leave them off and unplugged until they are assessed.

  • Corrosion slowed early

Prompt cleaning and controlled drying limit the corrosion that ruins boards and connectors in the days after a loss.

What electronics restoration includes

  • Power-down and isolation

Affected equipment stays off and unplugged, and power to wet areas is isolated when it is safe to do so.

  • Environmental control

Dehumidification and HEPA air filtration slow corrosion while equipment waits for cleaning.

  • Inventory and tagging

Each device is photographed, tagged and recorded with its location and exposure.

  • Residue cleaning

Housings and accessible components are cleaned with techniques suited to electronics, not general-purpose cleaners.

  • Controlled drying

Wet equipment is dried under controlled conditions rather than with heat that can damage components.

  • Data devices set aside

Servers, drives and storage are protected and kept unpowered for your IT team or data recovery provider.

  • Handback and documentation

Cleaned equipment returns to your technicians for testing, with records for your insurer.

When electronics need professional attention

  • Computers or servers in a room with smoke or soot
  • Equipment wet from sprinklers, roof leaks or flooding
  • A smoke odor coming from inside devices
  • Residue on screens, keyboards or vents
  • Control panels or network gear in a flooded area

Questions people ask us

Don’t see yours? A person answers 248-845-0000 around the clock.

Should we turn the computers on to see if they work?

No. Powering on wet or soot-contaminated equipment can cause short circuits and turn recoverable damage into permanent damage. Leave devices off and unplugged, and don't wipe soot from screens or vents before we assess them.

Can you recover our data?

We start by protecting it. Devices that hold data stay unpowered and untouched until they have been assessed, which gives the best chance of getting the data back. We work with your IT team so the equipment and the data are handled in the right order.

Will cleaning affect manufacturer warranties?

It can, which is why we check before touching anything under warranty or a service contract. Internal repairs and testing stay with the manufacturer's authorized service or your own technicians, and we clean only what they approve.

How do you decide between cleaning and replacing?

The decision depends on the exposure, the device's value and age, whether residue reached internal components and what your technicians find in testing. Some items aren't worth cleaning, and we'll say so. Your insurer makes the coverage call, and our records give them the facts.
