Many houses of worship in Metro Detroit are older buildings with large sanctuaries, high ceilings, plaster walls and wood floors or pews. A roof leak or ice dam can soak plaster long before a stain appears, and a basement hall or classroom wing is often the first place a flood or sewer backup reaches.
Fire and smoke are hard on these spaces. Soot settles on high ceilings, organ pipes, artwork, textiles and woodwork, and smoke odor works into carpet, cushions and vestments. Candles, kitchens and aging wiring are frequent sources of fire.
The building also belongs to a community. Weekly services, weddings, funerals, schools and food pantries depend on it, so the work has to fit around them.
What a place of worship needs from a restoration contractor
Respect for sacred spaces and objects
Sanctuaries, altars and sacred texts call for crews who slow down, ask first and follow the customs of your faith.
Work around worship
Loud work and demolition scheduled around services, holy days, weddings and funerals.
Care with historic materials
Plaster, stained glass, wood paneling and pews need gentle drying and cleaning, and older materials may need testing before removal.

Questions facility teams ask
Can we hold services while the building is being restored?
Often, yes. If the damage is limited to part of the building, we contain it and schedule loud work outside service times. If the sanctuary itself is affected, we plan the work so it returns to use as early as the damage allows.
How do you handle sacred objects and religious texts?
As your clergy or staff direct. We cover or move items with care, keep an inventory of anything that leaves the building and follow any religious requirements you share with us. Artwork, organs and stained glass get specialized care, and we agree with you on how each piece is handled before anything is moved.
Do you restore halls, schools and kitchens too?
Yes. Social halls, classrooms, kitchens and offices are often where damage starts, especially in basements. We restore the whole property, not only the main worship space.
