Water and fire damage restoration for schools and universities

A burst pipe over winter break or a roof leak during exams can take classrooms out of use. RMO dries, cleans and rebuilds on a schedule built around students, staff and the academic calendar.

How damage affects school buildings

School buildings often sit empty over breaks and long weekends, which is when pipes freeze and leaks go unnoticed. By the time staff return, water may have spread under classroom carpet, into wall cavities and down hallways. Wood gym floors are especially vulnerable, because they absorb water and start to cup and buckle if they aren't dried fast.

Older school and campus buildings add complications. Plaster, original floor tile and pipe insulation may contain asbestos, so suspect materials are tested before they are disturbed and handled safely if testing finds it. Science labs, art rooms and maintenance shops may also hold chemicals that water or fire can disturb.

Smoke travels through shared ventilation, so a small fire in one wing can leave soot and odor in classrooms far from it. Before students return, parents and staff want to know the rooms are clean.

What a school needs from a restoration contractor

  • Student safety on an active campus

Work zones walled off from students, exit routes kept clear and crews who follow your sign-in and badging rules.

  • Work timed to the calendar

Loud and dusty work scheduled for nights, weekends and breaks, so classes and testing can continue.

  • Accessibility and life safety maintained

Accessible routes, fire alarms and exits stay usable during the work, or temporary arrangements are agreed with the facility team first.

  • Answers the community can understand

Plain facts administrators can share with staff and families about what happened, what is being done and when each space will reopen.

Restoration services for schools and campuses

Water removed from classrooms, corridors and offices, then drying with daily moisture readings against set goals.

  • Gym floor drying

Fast water removal and controlled drying of wood athletic floors to limit cupping, with the floor's condition documented throughout.

  • Mold remediation

Containment, HEPA filtration and removal of affected materials by IICRC-certified technicians, coordinated with any independent testing the school orders.

  • Fire and smoke cleanup

Soot removal from classrooms, ceilings and contents, with odor treatment, following IICRC S700.

  • HVAC and duct cleaning

Cleaning of ductwork and air handlers that carried smoke, soot or construction dust through the building.

  • Rebuild

Drywall, ceilings, flooring and finishes restored by the same company, scheduled toward your reopening date.

How we work in schools

  • Phased around classes

We restore the building in phases, starting with the rooms you need first, and keep loud work to evenings, weekends and breaks.

  • One contact for facilities

Your facilities director or principal gets a daily update and a written schedule that can be shared with staff and families.

  • Records for the district

Photos, moisture readings, drying logs and an itemized scope go to the school's insurer or risk pool and its adjuster.

Questions facility teams ask

Can the work be finished before students return?

We plan around your reopening date from day one. Drying often takes a few days once the water is out, while rebuild time depends on what must be replaced. If some rooms can't be ready in time, you'll hear it early so you can plan around them.

When can a classroom reopen after mold or sewage cleanup?

Once the affected materials are removed or cleaned and the room has reached its drying goals. Many schools also order independent air testing before students return, and we schedule our work around that consultant. The final decision to reopen belongs to your administration.

Do you also work on college and university campuses?

Yes. The same approach fits classroom buildings, residence halls, libraries and athletic facilities. Campuses often have their own facilities teams and procedures, and we work within them.
