Fire damage restoration for Metro Detroit homes, from board-up to rebuild

Don't go back inside until the fire department says it's safe. Then call 248-845-0000: we secure the house first, clean up the water, soot and smoke, and rebuild what the fire took.

The first days after a house fire

Wait for the fire department to clear the building, and don't turn utilities back on yourself. Don't touch soot-covered walls or furniture: skin oils set stains and wiping smears soot deeper. Throw out food that was exposed to heat, smoke or firefighting water. If you can't stay in the home, ask your insurance carrier about temporary housing.

A fire leaves three kinds of damage: what burned, what the smoke reached and what the firefighting water soaked. Our crew handles all three. We board up openings and tarp the roof, extract water and set up drying, and remove debris and materials too damaged to save. Contents that can be cleaned are inventoried and packed out so the structure can be worked on.

Then comes the detailed cleaning. Soot is removed from walls, ceilings and framing with methods matched to the residue, smoke odor is treated at its source, and the HVAC system is checked so it doesn't spread soot when it runs again. The work follows the ANSI/IICRC S700 standard for fire and smoke damage. When the structure is clean, RMO handles the reconstruction.

  • Secured first

Board-up and roof tarping protect the house from weather and entry as soon as the fire department releases it.

  • Cleanup and rebuild planned together

Water removal, soot cleaning, odor treatment and reconstruction run as one plan, so you aren't coordinating separate crews.

What fire damage restoration includes

  • Walk-through and documentation

Once the house is cleared, we document burned areas, smoke spread and water damage room by room.

  • Board-up and tarping

Windows broken by heat and roof openings cut by firefighters are covered right away.

  • Water removal

Water from fire hoses is extracted and wet materials are dried, so a second kind of damage doesn't set in.

  • Debris removal

Charred materials and ruined contents are removed after they're photographed and listed for your claim.

  • Contents pack-out

Belongings that can be cleaned are inventoried, packed and moved out so rooms can be cleaned and rebuilt.

  • Soot and smoke cleaning

Walls, ceilings, cabinets and framing are cleaned with methods chosen for the type of soot.

  • Odor treatment

Smoke odor is treated after the residue is cleaned, not covered up with fragrance.

  • Reconstruction

From framing and drywall to paint and flooring, RMO rebuilds the damaged rooms.

Why RMO after a house fire

  • Fire jobs are water jobs too

Our IICRC-certified team extracts and dries the firefighting water while the fire cleanup is being planned.

  • A record of your belongings

Inventories and photos of packed-out contents help you and your adjuster track what was cleaned and what was lost.

  • Tear-out with the rebuild in mind

Because RMO also rebuilds, we decide what to remove and what to clean with the reconstruction already planned.

Questions people ask us

Don’t see yours? A person answers 248-845-0000 around the clock.

When can I go back into my house after a fire?

Only after the fire department says the building is safe to enter. Even then, keep the visit short, wear a mask and gloves, and take only essentials such as medications, documents and keys. Leave the cleaning for later, since it's easy to set soot deeper by accident.

Can smoke-damaged belongings be saved?

Many can. Dishes, hard furniture and other hard-surface items can often be cleaned, while porous items badly affected by heat or soot may not be worth restoring. We sort them with you and document both groups for your claim.

Who deals with my insurance adjuster?

You file the claim and make the decisions. We work directly with your adjuster, sharing photos, readings and an itemized scope, and can walk the damage with them on site. Coverage decisions belong to your carrier.
