The weather that brings the calls

Metro Detroit sees sudden summer downpours that overwhelm sewers, and winter cold that splits pipes. Three recent examples, from the National Weather Service.

Michigan households that asked FEMA for help
  • August 2014 flood (DR-4195)127,390
  • June 2021 flood (DR-4607)100,048
  • August 2023 storms (DR-4757)146,807

Every registration in Michigan for each disaster. A registration is a household asking for help, not proof of damage, and most basement backups never reach FEMA. OpenFEMA Housing Assistance data, pulled 2026-10-12.

  1. August 11, 2014

4 to 6 inches of rain in about four hours

The storm fell on Wayne, southern Oakland and Macomb counties. The National Weather Service put direct flood damage at $1.8 billion.

  2. January 30 and 31, 2019

13 and 14 below zero at Detroit Metro Airport

Records for both dates. Deep cold like this freezes pipes in exterior walls, crawl spaces and unheated rooms.

  3. June 25 and 26, 2021

    3 to 6 inches in 24 hours

Most of Metro Detroit was soaked, and flooded basements were reported throughout the morning of June 26.
